The latest kernels that Atjeu recomends are located on the Atjeu server:
http://www.atjeu.com/kernel-2.4.20-28.7.i386.rpm
http://www.atjeu.com/kernel-2.4.20-28.8.i386.rpm
http://www.atjeu.com/kernel-2.4.20-28.9.i386.rpm
http://www.atjeu.com/kernel-smp-2.4.20-28.7.i686.rpm
http://www.atjeu.com/kernel-smp-2.4.20-28.8.i686.rpm
http://www.atjeu.com/kernel-smp-2.4.20-28.9.i686.rpm

Please make sure that you use the correct kernel for your server. Using the wrong one will make the server inaccessible.

The ones with SMP in the name are for multi processsor machines only or hyperthreading machines like dual xeons or p4 3.06. Other then that its straight forward, if there is a 7 in the name then its for rh 7.x, if there is an 8 in the name its for 8 and 9 for 9.

1. wget http://www.atjeu.com/kernelname
2. rpm -ihv kernalname
3. edit /etc/grub.conf and change the line that says default to 0 instead of whatever other number is there (usually 1). Make sure to save the file.
4. reboot

Upgrading a kernel after these instructions is very simple and straightforward, and it takes but a couple of minutes. Thumbs up for Atjeu to give us a download location that's not only not breaking connections like RedHat did yesterday all the time, but it's also real fast, the kernel was wgetted in maybe 5 seconds. ;)

Earlier on I was a bit wary of doing kernel upgrades, but now I did it a couple of times it's really no big deal and is important for security (and unlike other security updates, this one isn't automatically installed on cPanel servers). Every server owner should do kernel upgrades the day they come out.

Just a note on these kernels.

We had an issue today with a kernel becoming damage or corrupted, tech guys rebooted into an older kernel which is 'smp'

They mentioned that we should be running smp kernels anyway with machines over 1 gig of ram.

Your forums quote
"

Can you clarify this please.

Our machines are mostly single cpu all with more than 1 gig ram and most are 2.6 ghz speed cpu's.

thanks.

smp kernels are for dual cpu machines or hyperthreading machines (anything at atjeu that is over 2.4ghz is hyperthreading) so all single cpu over 2.4ghz and all dual cpu machines (dual xeons) should be running smp kernels. All single cpu machines 2.4ghz and under cannot run the smp kernel.
