How to Make a swap File instead of a swap partition

You can create a swap file by:

1. dd if=/dev/zero of=/sfile bs=1024 count=4096000
This will create a file image of size 4 GB.
2. mkswap /sfile
This will setup the swap file fo you.
3. swapon /sfile
To enable the new swap file.
4. Edit /etc/fstab and put the entry:
/sfile swap swap defaults 0 0
to start this swap location every time you boot the machine.

You can verify the new swap file settings by:

cat /proc/swaps
